Comet 4c - Dan Air

Dan Air

B.O.A.C. may have been first to operate Comets, and set records, but Dan Air had no fewer than 49 Comets and flew more hours than any other airline. Chances are, if you have ever flown in a Comet, it was with Dan Air. I chose the initial livery, because it was when the aircraft had just been bought, many still with polished metal fuselages and wings from their first owners.

This view shows how the glass and windows have considerable thickness.

The main maintenance facility, Dan Air Engineering, was based at Lasham Airfield, but as far as passengers were concerned, most flight operated from London Gatwick (EGKK) - shown here.

The very fine pin stripes caused some anguish when I got to the pinion tanks on the wings. I had to separate the nose-cone and use the front elevation to map the texture, to bring the Dan Air stripe to a sharp point. I reworked the Mexicana livery for consistency, so they still use the same basic object files.

All the graphics, from the Dan Air lettering to the logo on the tail, have been drawn from scratch using Adobe Illustrator.
